Eduardo Torres Acosta Versante Nord Terre Siciliane Nerello Mascalese 2016

$32.99

Although his first commercial vintage was 2014, Eduardo Torres Acosta is no first-timer to wine. He was born and raised on Tenerife in the Canary Islands with a small vineyard plot at home to farm.andnbsp; He got his first break at Passopisciaro on Mt. Etna, one of the pioneers in bringing Nerello Mascalese to the global spotlight with their 'contrada' (single vineyard) bottlings. He managed to find a few small parcels on the cooler, north-facing high elevation sites on Mt. Etna to rent.andnbsp; Although they have the 'IGT Terre Siciliane' designation because they are vinified at Occhipinti in Vittoria, they are pure Etna through and through.andnbsp; This is 80% Nerello Mascalese/20% other native red andamp; white varietals. The grapes come from two parcels - Pietramarina andamp; Crasa. These are 45-50 year old vines at approximately 1500-2200ft. above sea level on sandy volcanic soil. They are spontaneously fermented with partial whole cluster in cement tank and aged 16months in Slavonian oak botti. A lovely, pure, vibrant expression of Nerello, with ripe raspberry/cherry fruit, wet earth and silky tannins

Luminous red. Aromas of flinty red berries, fresh herbs and broom on the enticing nose. Then richer and riper than the Pirrera, with a smoother, deeper personality and a more balanced approach to its fleshy and structured red fruit and herbal flavors. Finishes long and crisp. (Ian D'Agata, Vinous, August 2019)

It’s a hard grape to grow, as you know. It’s thin-skinned, temperamental. It’s not a survivor like Cabernet that can grow anywhere and thrive even when neglected. PINOT needs constant care and attention, you know? And in fact it can only grow in these really specific, little, tucked away corners of the world. And, and only the most patient and nurturing of growers can do it, really. Only somebody who really takes the time… to understand PINOT’S potential… can then coax it into its fullest expression.”

Etna meets Burgundy? This is no doubt and etna wine that’s true to its terrior, but if I didn’t know where it was from I could easily think this burgundy.

2016 is straight up fresh with gentle depth, a sort of Etna / Burgundy mash-up. Extremely enjoyable.
