My first time with the controversial 2003. Purchased on release and right to storage. Opened and immediately decanted.Poured like a 5 yr old wine not a 19 year old wine. The best way to describe both the nose and palate, anonymous. If it were served blind, I would never guess Chave Hermitage. Tasted more like a mid-level Australian shiraz or even an amarone . Structure was there but flavors were approaching shrill. Perhaps what impressed me the most was how the massive alcohol level was well concealed.

2003 is still 10+ years young. Plenty of tannins from both oak and fruit, and gobs of ripe black fruit. A "manly" wine and has some metalicism, iron, plums, blackberries, violets, and pepper.

Great wine but a bit out of sync when compared to better vintages of chave heritage blanc. Still a deep and rich wine like you'd expect but maybe the hot vintage and high alcohol throws it off.
