Domaine Bernard Baudry Les Grézeaux Chinon Cabernet Franc 2018

$31.99

Bernard and his son, andnbsp;Matthieuandnbsp;Baudry are relative newcomers by the standards of this ancient wine center, but this only makes it that much more remarkable how highly their status has risen in recent times. Bernard started theandnbsp;domaineandnbsp;in the 70and#39;s and pieced together an enviable collection of top parcels across theandnbsp;appellation, butandnbsp;Matthieuandnbsp;runs the show here now that Bernard has retired. Balance is king at thisandnbsp;domaine, and though the wines can be dense and powerful, these are also, as their NY importer points out, andquot;precise, textured Chinon.andquot;andnbsp; Les Grezeaux is made from a plot of 40-year-old vines planted in gravel over a bed of clay and limestone and the 2018 is simply wonderful. This is vinous Cab Franc that is extremely well suited to the dinner table.andnbsp; Elegant texture with ripe tannins and flavors of blackberry and violet with no bell pepper in sight.andnbsp; Wonderful now, don't be afraid toandnbsp;hold it for 5-10 years.

Brilliant magenta. Maybe the most delicious young Chinon (or cab franc for that matter) I’ve ever tasted. Pure varietal character with no compromises— all the freshness, lightness and peppery bite one wants— yet with perfect ripeness. And by that I mean this hovers on that magical edge where the grapes must have been picked at the ideal moment, down to the minute, to produce something not just giving but with all sorts of push and pull. Flirtatious, seductive. The fruit and flowers are achingly fresh: black raspberries, red and black currants, elderberry, violets, roses, fresh herbs, and an ever so slight cocoa sweetness. Spot on acid and the tannins are handled so deftly that you hardly notice. I can’t get enough of this. Masterful wine, drinking beautifully but should only get better.

Oh my goodness. Still a bit on the green side. Green pepper, tar, tobacco. Will have to try this in a few years and see how much it has mellowed.
