Bernard and his son, andnbsp;Matthieuandnbsp;Baudry are relative newcomers by the standards of this ancient wine center, but this only makes it that much more remarkable how highly their status has risen in recent times. Bernard started theandnbsp;domaineandnbsp;in the 70and#39;s and pieced together an enviable collection of top parcels across theandnbsp;appellation, butandnbsp;Matthieuandnbsp;runs the show here now that Bernard has retired. Balance is king at thisandnbsp;domaine, and though the wines can be dense and powerful, these are also, as their NY importer points out, andquot;precise, textured Chinon.andquot; La Croix Boissandeacute;e is the pinnacle of their production. The red from this vineyard comes from 15-40 year old vines planted on soils with a a thin layer of clay over a bed of especially chalky limestone. The wine is aged for two years in older barrels and bottled unfiltered. What is so striking about this wine is its effortless combination of ripeness andamp; concentration with lovely detail and seamless, perfectly judged structure. This is the essence of Loire Valley Cabernet Franc at its finest, a compelling, classy and particularly ageworthy beauty of a wine.

From one of their top single parcels. More serious and viscous than the basic Chinon Blanc. Very nice now, but will be truly great with time.
