While this does feature an almost heavy handed application of oak, it's from a time before the plastic surgery/fidget spinner/Mega Purple added/residual sugar high that is Caymus today. Pungent and filled with creamy red earth, tobacco, roasting coffee beans, cedar, dried cherry, and juicy plum.

Not the special select but very surprised to see how well this wine has developed. Strong shouldered and a little more linear in the mid palate as opposed to the current rich and rounded versions.

Would have been amazing...not a dead soldier, but well past its prime.

Tannic to the nose upon opening, let it breath for about 45 mins. Smooth as silk, leather and black cherries, lovely.

This bottle has traveled around a lot and expectations were low. Cork showed its age when popped and fears were heightened. Bust as luck had it, the wine was excellent and got better as it opened. Now, obviously past peak, it still displayed nice fruit and berry at opening, soft tannins through out and a spivey finish that lasted longer than expected. A fun bottle to drink (waited a long long time to open) for a great holiday tradition.
