Caprili Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2016 (1500ml)

$120

Caprili is one of the original Brunello estates founded in 1965 when there were fewer than 20 properties in the zone.andnbsp;Established in an area called Tavernelleandshy; by the Bartolommei family, the estate was centered on a property purchased from an historic estate called Pieve Santa Restituta.andnbsp; This particular hillside sits in a sort of goldilocks zone in the southern part of Brunello that is extremely well suited to Sangiovese. Its low enough in elevation to have a warm microclimate but high enough to generally avoid frost damage or excessive heat.andnbsp; This is the same area that Gianfranco Soldera decided to purchase land in when he founded his legendary property Case Basse, located just south of Caprili.andnbsp; The work here is cut from a traditional cloth with organic farming, native yeast fermentations in steel, and aging in large botti of 30-60 hectoliters for 3 years for the Brunello.andnbsp; Classically styled Brunello with pure fruit and great lift, it drinks wonderfully now but is also certain to age well; Caprili stands out not only as a wonderful bottle of Brunello but also a bargain in a zone where there are few to be found.

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino opens slowly in the glass, inward and darkly floral. The nose hints at black currants, underbrush, exotic spices and crushed ashen stone, as if the soils of this Tavernelle estate have been imparted into its bouquet. This soothes with textures of pure silk, stepping lightly, as a wave of ripe red and black fruits easily flow across the palate, guided by saline-tinged acidity. Orange notes add contrast. The 2016 finishes staining and long, placing its minerality front and center. A saturation of fine tannins frames the experience as traces of licorice slowly fade. It's like liquid earth, yet juicy. Wow. A fantastic performance. (Eric Guido, Vinous, December 2023)

Quiet. Lean and mean. Very tannic.

This is a serious brunello. Light color and totally closed on open. With patience, it begins to open up over 2 hours. More time would have been rewarded, but hey, I was thirsty. Pretty, wound-up fruit. Nice, nice finish. Really enjoyed this 2016.

Rainy weather wine. Quite smooth and delicate upon opening. Red jammy fruit with herbal, tannic finish. Going to wait a few hours for the next taste.

9/2021. Nice Brunello. Big flavor and feel. Paired well with all the food we had at the Wild Olive in Charleston SC.
