Cantina dei Produttori Carema Riserva Carema Nebbiolo 2016

$32.99

The Nebbiolo grape (of Barolo andamp; Barbarescoandnbsp;fame) needs little introduction to anyone familiar with the best wines of Northern Italy. In Carema, as in many of the other beautiful Nebbioloandnbsp;based wines from the outer reaches of Piedmont, it sings a somewhat different tune. Barolo andamp; Barbaresco drinkers will find some familiarity in the captivating aromatics that this Produttori wine shows, but there is a finesse and elegance to this wine that is totally unique. Carema is quite a cool appellation, but it is blessed with plenty of sunlight and an exceptionally long growing season. This helps to create wines of noticeable freshness with a complexity and depth that seem almost at odds with their lithe character.andnbsp;

From a lesser known “produttori” in Piemonte. Cantina Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema (what a mouthful) is a tiny cooperative in, you guessed it, Carema. Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of two days. Fairly consistent throughout but I think I preferred the energy on Day 1. The 2016 Riserva pours a pale garnet with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity and no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of pomegranate, slightly bruised strawberry, toe jam (yeah, well…I’m not wrong), alpine herbs, roses some balsamico and rocky earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and saline with a silky texture. Until now, my only experience with the Carema DOC has been with Ferrando’s Etichetta Bianca and Etichetta Nera. While this bottle didn’t have the same drama as those wines from Ferrando, this was a very good example of Carema. Drink now and through 2031.

Transparent ruby verging on umber-red in the glass, showing just a little bit of Nebbiolo development. Nose is barely ripe tart cherries and cherry pits, beef jerky, smoke, and more subtle floral perfume that develops with time. Tart Hungarian (baloton) cherries on the palate, which at first seems rustic but becomes more and more refined with air. Transparent, unique and sure to improve with time.

Almost opaque, light brickish scarlet. Smokey, dried savory cherry notes…. Gorgeous balance between acid and fruit. Hard to keep from crushing the entire glass. The finish goes on for 90 seconds and makes me smile. Marcella Hazan’s Bolognese is near perfection and works so well with the mountain-grown Nebbiolo.

Surprise! A precocious Barolo showing off with good balance and acidity. Producer alert.

Light brown/red color…violet, rose, bright cherry notes… very light in texture, bright and lively acidity. A bit young, but very nice with grilled pork tenderloin, risotto with fresh zucchini and oven roasted tomatoes. Very nice food wine … sitting on a few more for next few years. Nebbiolo works so well with slow cooked risotto with lots of fresh parmigiana regiano.
