Bernard Levet Les Journaries Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2018

$90

The Levet family are among the most dependable sources each vintage for uncompromisingly old-school Cote-Rotie. These are not wines of flash, but they are full of character, expertly poised and perform magically with proper age. The wines tend towards the earthy, savory, spicy end of the spectrum with an unabashed feral intensity. This character isandnbsp;due in no small part to the large percentage ofandnbsp;sandeacute;rineandnbsp;that the Levetsandnbsp;tend, which is a particularly thin skinned and small berried version of Syrah. Les Journaires is drawn largely from an old-vine plot in the famous La Landonne vineyard with a portion of the fruit coming from the Cote Brune. It is always a bit more subtle and open than Chavaroche but is no less serious a wine, handily rewarding 5-10 years in the cellar. 30-40% of the grapes are destemmed before fermentation, aged in demi muids and foudres for 2 years.
