The Benanti family were trailblazers in producing single vineyard wines on the slopes of Mount Etna and were one of the first families to own vineyards on the Northern, Eastern, and the Southern face of the mountain.andnbsp; Serra della Contessa is sourced from a head trained vineyard on the southern face of Mount Etna planted at 500 meters, generally a warm site for Etna.andnbsp; The wine is quite ripe and forward, with chewy tannins balanced by bright acidity.andnbsp; Despite the structure, it remains fresh on the palate with minerality to spare.andnbsp; The 2014 vintage was especially successful in Sicily (unlike many other parts of Italy) and the 2014 Serra della Contessa is certain to be more open than the Rovittello in the near term. Hand harvested, fermented with indigenous yeast in stainless steel, and aged in 15 HL French oak for 24 months.

Pretty oxidized. Guessing a combo of vintage and winemaking?

Label indicates that this comes from estate vines that over a hundred years old. Almost translucent. The wine is an intriguing mix of savory earthy, slightly gravely texture and dark fruits and anise. Very complex. The grip suggests a long life ahead.

Light bodied, with hints of dried cherry and cranberry. A surprisingly lingering and satisfying finish for a light red.
