Azienda Agricola Maccario - Dringenberg Rossese di Dolceacqua 2016

Liguria is a rugged, hilly region that sits just along the coast of Northwest Italy, home to the famous Cinque Terre. Given the setting, you would think that the area would be most well-known for its white wines. Although we've loved plenty of delightfully seafood-friendly Liguirian whites, we've been especially enchanted by several reds made from the rare and beautiful Rossese di Dolceaqua grape. Rosseseandnbsp;can wear many hats, but think of it somewhere on the spectrum between Gamay, Syrah and the alpine reds of France andamp; Italy. It has all the bright fruits of Gamay, the spice, structure and terroir transparency of Syrah and the appealing herbaceous expression and minerality of great alpine wines. Giovanna Maccarioandnbsp;is in charge of the Maccarioandnbsp;Dringenberg estate today, where Rossese takes center stage. She and her husband Goetz Dringenberg workandnbsp;their old vines (some are 120+ years old) in the ancient albarello/bush trained system in order to protect the vines from the often extreme conditions of the area. Tractors are not an option in this steep terrain, so all the work is done by hand. All of the Dringenberg wines are vinified in steel tanks to maintain the unique aromatic expression of this captivating variety.andnbsp;Theandnbsp;'Classico' is a blend of several different sites of Rossesse around the property. This is a juicy and charming version that drinks beautifully right out of the gate.

Unusual. Starts poorly, with an odd, ‘onion skin’ taste straight out of the bottle, but soon blossoms into a quite remarkably rounded, yet light, mouthful.
