Azienda Agricola Elvio Cogno Cascina Nuova Barolo Nebbiolo 2016

$60

Elvio Cogno is a legendary wine maker who has led a storied career in Barolo, first at the Marcarini Winery beginning in the 1960's and then with his own estate founded in Novello 1990 when he was 60 years old! Centered on a prime parcel in Ravera, Elvio Cogno was the first producer to understand the immense potential of this corner of Barolo and remains the largest holder of the cru with over 11 hectares under vine.andnbsp; Joined by his son-in-law Walter Fissore in 1996, the Cogno winery continues to crank out topflight Barolo 30 years on. Cascina Nuova Barolo is drawn from young vines in the Ravera cru intentionally styled to offer more accessibility in its youth than the estates other bottlings. The wine is aromatic with appealing dark fruit flecked with notes of citrus and pressed flowers.andnbsp; The palate is open knit with whispery tannins and fresh acidity; a remarkably open example of Ravera.andnbsp; This is such a wonderful introduction to this great estate for those who haven't tasted the wines; the 2016 Cascina Nuova drinks beautifully now but is sure to improve over the next 5-10 years.

A nice Barolo to enjoy now! Fermented in stainless and aged 2 years in oak. Medium ruby color with aromas of ripe red fruits and hints of sweet floral spice. On the palate flavors of black cherry, plums and hints of figs. Tannins are firm yet open with high acidity, medium smooth finish ending with tobacco and earthy herb notes. Very nice.

Need to try one of the Cogno crus. This base level Barolo is excellent, and so persistent in 2016.

I usually wait until later in the Fall to have Barolo, but I got ahead of myself! What a great one. On the brighter, juicier side. Red fruit forward with herbal earthiness and subdued tannins. Tasting great after 4 hours. Curious how the rest of the bottle will be tomorrow.

Mighty tasty. Full of life. Juicy. Just a pinch of mint, tar, red berry. Love Barolo.

Piemonte tasting #4 After 10h decanting this finally shows... wilted flower petals, mushroom soup, light cherries. Beautiful mouthfeel with the typical tannic grip yet with the beautiful flow and juicy, acidic drinkability. Barolo is just hard to beat!
