When someone says breakfast wine, I usually think of mimosas, roses and bright crisp porch pounding whites. THIS Syrah is breakfast wine, but for completely different reasons. First, the nose: maple syrup covered breakfast griddle sausage. Then, as you slurp it on down, the mouth is completely crispy meaty maple bacon with a French roast coffee finish. You can practically crunch the grinds in your teeth, it’s so chewy. And when I say maple, this juice is by no means sweet, but all essence. Yep, I’d have this for breakfast. Errr, with breakfast. Move over latte, you’ve been replaced!

The 2019 Syrah North Coast is superb. A boisterous, forward wine, the North Coast Syrah is loaded with inky dark fruit, chocolate, mint, licorice, spice and menthol. The North Coast was done 100% whole clusters and aged in a combination of concrete and neutral oak. It comes across as a bit riper in profile than most of the Pax Syrahs, but for a wine meant to be enjoyed young, who cares? (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, September 2021)

Excellent. The beginning: strong blackberry. Then: a coffee (ground beans), maybe leather. The finish: pepper.

Amazing dark fruit and pepper (at only 12.5% alc). Could easily fill in for N Rhone. Enjoyed as part of wine pairing at One White Street (NYC)

Intense and savory with notes of dark fruit, pepper, and olive. Delicious now, but would likely benefit from some aging. A taste of the Northern Rhone from the North Coast of California. Purchased at Suburban Wines in Yorktown Heights, NY.

Savory with plenty of dark fruit. Could use a bit of cellar time to help balance it out a bit or not if that is your preference

Changes pretty drastically in the glass even with just a few minutes of air. Wet pavement, just opened out of the plastic wrapper happy meal play toys and cherry pie on the nose. Wait, going back, just 2 mins later there’s some bergamot in there now. Sip it, youth is pretty obvious, but some nice minerality and tart fruits, hint of bandaid. Finishes with menthol leading into a lifesaver.
