Furry nose of black currants, black cherries, dank florals, tobacco. On the palate, black, ultramarine and red fruit, ripe cherries, toasted barley, light cocoa and deep spices. Young and heavy tannins, but with a few hours of air this is very nice- velvety, with flowers, minty herbs and spices. Chewy but lively. Needs 15 more years. Even so, not sure I see it meriting the same high marks as the professional critics gave it. Time will tell, I guess.

Tobacco, leather, cherry. This is one hell of a wine. Plenty of grip. Complex and interesting to a T. 2016 Haut Bailly is stunning. Seriously stunning.

Jammed full of rich black fruit—blackberry, some plum-like notes, tar, spice, and juicy, generous tannins. Serious richness, serious value

Improbably inky. Hard, grippy. Back flavors, very little fruit. Tar. Big.

Nice and juicy, ruby dark fruits. Dry round, firm tannins. Earthy stone, dark dry soil & clay finish. Will be very good in time.

Drank 1/18/19 at the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux event in Miami. All wines from the 2016 Vintage. Tasting pour, no formal notes taken. Most of these wines are very tight, and will require 5-15 years to really come together. Many will likely improve a few points with time.

Haut-Bailly Dinner in SF with Veronique Sanders of Haut-Bailly. The 16 is sensational. The 16 vintage has the widest drinking window that I have tasted in my 25 years tasting Bordeaux. The style is lighter, brighter, ripe fruits, blackberries, black cherries, black raspberries, dark cola, picked up nice expresso notes revisiting another tasting at the end of dinner, beautiful understated earth of; stones, dry top soil & clay, dark fresh & slightly withering flowers. Great acidy. Elegant, well balanced finish that wows young. This will flirt with a near perfect score in 15-20 years of bottle age. Served with Creek Stone Farm Filet of Beef, Sautéed Potatoes, Red Wine Sauce. @Mathilde French Bistro Photos of; Clyde Beffa Owner of K&L Wine Merchants & Veronique Sanders, dinner menu & pairing & dinner guests.
