Tenuta San Leonardo Terre di San Leonardo Vigneti delle Dolomiti Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2017

$21

The entry level wine from what is arguably Trentino's most famous estate, the Terre di San Leonardo is a blend of Cabernet 50%, Cab Franc 40% and Camenere 10% and, like the flagship San Leonardo, beautifully takes Bordeaux varietals and expresses them through the high-altitude, cool-climate alpine lens.  It's unmistakably a Cabernet-based red, but, with it's electric energy, high-toned aromatic nature and overall lighter feel, it's also unmistakably Dolomiti.   Vintage: 2017 Country: Italy Region: Trentino Appellation: Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon 50%, Cabernet Franc 40%, Carmenere 10% Drink: Now-2025

Terre di San Leonardo is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (40%), and Carmenere (10%), run by the Gonzaga family since its inception in 1724. Wine is fermented with ambient yeasts in concrete tanks and 20% is aged in French oak barrels. Ruby with aromas ripe red fruits and floral notes. On the palate flavors of rich plum and blackberry with herb, light spice and slight earthy notes. Medium+ finish, fine soft tannins, ending with fruit, floral and earthy mineral character. Tremendous value!

The 2017 Terre di San Leonardo keeps you coming back to the glass to take in its intense bouquet of spiced raspberries, black licorice, crushed chalk and peppery florals. This is silky with depths of dark wild berries and inner herbal tones, all accelerated by brisk acids and a subtle hint of sour citrus. It leaves the palate reeling, lightly structured yet spry, as a primary coating of red and black fruit slowly fades. The warmth of the vintage has imparted another level of richness that isn’t often found from the Terre di San Leonardo, making it an excellent option for near-term enjoyment. This is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Carmenère from the younger vines on the San Leonardo estate. (Eric Guido, Vinous, June 2022)

Bordeaux blend from the Dolomites region. High in acidity and some adorable VA. Definitely a dinner wine! Very nice!

Lovely aromatic with red fruit, pomegranate, some cassis and an undertone of dark, moist earth. A hint of pencil shavings, too. On the palate this is medium bodied, cool, fresh & juicy, the tannins adding a nice, firm frame. Nice interplay between the sweet & sour red fruit and savoury undertones. Long silky finish with a touch of mint & sage. Fresher & cooler than 2016, but consistently v. good & brilliant value for a Bordeaux blend! Yum!
