Château Montus Cuvée Prestige Madiran Tannat 2001 (1500ml)
Alain Brumont's Château Montus is SW France's most storied winery, and their Tannat-based Madiran reds will ably stand next to the great wines in the world. The Cuvée Prestige is their top wine made of 100% Tannat, and released only after enough bottle-age for it to be ready to drink in the estate's eyes. This 2001 is fantastic. The unique micro climate of Madiran made for a fabulous vintage. Dark, rich, powerful, savory and intensely mineral, it's textbook Madiran and a beautiful example of the brilliance of Montus. Dark (black) colour with garnet shines, great depth. First nose is quite discreet, then still bright fruity notes, cocoa, balsamic, tar, petroleum, tobacco, leather. Advanced notes, undergrowth, humus. The first sip definitely lines your mouth with wide and round tannins, where fruit and wood are harmoniously melted, on a superb finish of persistence. What an adventure! Requis at least two or three hours of aeration to deliver. Robe sombre (noire) au teintes grenat/tuilé d’une grande profondeur. Premier nez discret, puis des notes fruitées encore vives, cacao, balsamique, goudron, pétrole, tabac, cuir. Notes évoluées, sous-bois, humus. La première gorgée vous tapisse définitivement la bouche de tanins amples et ronds, où fruit et bois sont harmonieusement fondues, sur une finale superbe de rémanence. Quelle aventure! A besoin d’au moins deux, trois heures d’aération, pour se livrer.

Licorice and leather in the palette, power and funk in the nose. I would give this wine a 5, but my bottle was not stored properly and was slightly cooked. But I could still taste the excellence of this wine. A perfect choice to accompany steak.

Magnificant example of Brumont's Tannat magic. Dark, powerfull fruit and spices. Remarkable how the 15% alcohol is veiled behind the balanced and elegant flavours. Long finish. More mature than the 2000 we tasted last week, but enough tannines and puissance left that will carry this Madiran for years to come. Great wine!
