Two More Fantastic 2013 Red Burgs

October 13th, 2022

Well, the Mets have broken our hearts once again, but I'm choosing to be optimistic anyway...

One, because the collective negativity of the Met fanbase hasn't done much for us over the course of my life.

Two, our new owner won't stand for 'just good season'.

Three, the Jets are looking good.

Four, the Rangers start tonight.

And, finally, five, the Fall is truly in full swing in what is always my favorite month of the year, and a weekend loaded with comforting foods and good red wine always keeps the soul buoyant.

As such, I'm very excited to offer two recent discoveries from my continuous mining of the market for delicious and affordable reds from the 2013 vintage, because most of them are showing so beautifully right now...

...and beautiful red Burgundy and the month of October go together like Mets fans and suffering...

...except the experience is much more enjoyable with the Burgundies...

JEAN CHAUVENET Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Argillas 2013
The Argillas vineyard lies on the southern end of the northern half of Nuits Saint Georges, closer to Vosne Romanée, where the masculine nature of Nuits has a touch more elegance to it.  And that's what I really like about this fantastic wine - the way the burly structure and pungent earthiness are offset by the fragrant, exotic spice and deep red fruits.  It's certainly going nowhere quickly but, for a rich fall meal, this will do just fine right now.

VINCENT BOUZEREAU Volnay 1er Cru Champans 2013
Bouzereau's Meursault and Chassagne have been sleeper favorites of mine for a while now, but this is really my first foray into their reds.  But it's a good foray.  The wonderful, round, supple Cote de Beaune fruit shows the darker side of red, but does so within the lovely, airy space that classic Volnay occupies.  The earthy depth continues to develop and the signature transparency of the 2013 vintage allows it all to shine through.
