The fruit for "La Chapelle" is sourced predominantly from Le Méal and Bessards (with a little form Greffieux and Rocoules. Relative to the two Chave’s, the 1988 “La Chapelle” seems a bit more like a Hermitage fastball right down the middle of the plate. Desiccated mixed berries, olives, purple flowers, and minerals with a touch of ethyl acetate. Again a great pairing with grilled lamb and Moroccan spices. Vinous and drinking well now through 2035.

A bit uninspired and soft. But, I wouldn’t kick it out of bed for eating crackers.

1988 gets dissed a lot in fine wine circles regardless of which country it comes from, but, as time goes by, they continue to gain momentum in their continuing evolution from rather coarse, tannic, and unbalanced ducklings to beautiful, graceful swans--this La Chapelle is one of those swans!

1988 pale garnet and throwing a lot of sediment. Still showing but needs to be drunk now. Dried violets and berries, smoke and light pepper accents. Long savory finish.

1988 vintage Straight forward hermitage on a very pleasant stage right now. Nose is powerful, animal, meaty, smoke, bacon, ash.

'88 vintage. Perhaps the most elegant La Chapelle I've tried. Still, the nose of confit figs and touches of tar, butterscotch and light cinnamon, it's a cocktail. There is blonde tobacco here as well. The mouthfeel is quite balanced and harmonious, perhaps lacking the power bite I love in La Chapelle. Very consistent and strong wine.
