Founded by Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, a student in the art of wine making. Blend of 65% Tempranillo, 25% Garnacho, 10% Mazuelo and Graciano, aromas of sweet berry fruits and spice notes. On the palate cherry and ripe strawberry flavors with citrus notes, cinnamon spice. Fine smooth tannins, long finish, well balanced, ending with fruit and earthy tones. Nice value.

Ha, 2010 Crianza. With air starts to take on Bosconia forms. The velvety oak & vanilla notes are more pronounced on opening day, but wait: this seems to be a particularly good Cubillo vintage, it all melds into a Lopez unique form of poetry. Crushed red fruits, bay leaf, velvety, fresh mouthfeel. We all deserve 20$ bottles like this.

In many ways a baby Tondonia, this ‘Crianza’* from López de Heredia is a great entry point to the wines of one of Rioja’s oldest wineries, and in many ways mimics the styles of its more upmarket reds. Not dissimilar in style to Viña Tondonia, this medium-bodied red cuts a leaner profile with dried red fruit, bags of vanilla and characteristically fierce orange zest acidity. The aroma is intoxicating and packs the leathery, savoury punch that is the hallmark of classical Rioja. It lacks the purity and depth of fruit of its bigger brother, and finishes slightly shorter, but for the price (£17/btl) it’s an exceptional - and of course traditional - Rioja that any lover of the region should seek out, and one which should provide ample enjoyment over the coming decade or more. *this wine spent enough time in barrel and bottle to easily qualify for Gran Reserva status, but of López de Heredia’s wines it is always the ‘youngest’.

This single vineyard Rioja opens with an intense bouquet of sandalwood with pipe tobacco, leather and red fruits that align with the citrus zest and peat moss undertones. The palate revels in its silky texture and soft mouthfeel. Generous red fruits dance with exotic spices, and shades of orange infused black truffle on this exotic palate. Marvelous now at the nine year mark, the 2010 ‘Vina Cubillo’ will cellar well for at least another decade. Drink 2019-2029- 92
