Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2014

$96

GUARANTEED BEST PROVENANCE: IMPORTED BY AIR FROM ITALY AND STOCKED IN CALIFORNIA 2014 Montepulciano from Emidio Pepe?  Yes, you read that right — that super-expensive collector's wine that is ridiculously priced in the US (over $110 for 2010 vintage) is now available here in the US, years before the importer is allowed to bring it over. These are fresh bottles imported directly from Italy where Emidio Pepe releases wines earlier to a very hungry Italian wine crowd. Now you can join them too, exclusively through Dall'Uva. At room temperature, the nose is aromatic with dark red fruits like juicy cherries and blackberries. There's a rustic spiciness with black pepper and a touch of nutmeg, modest tannins and delicious acidity given the cool ripening year.  I'd pair this beauty with grilled or pan-fried steaks. I decant this and wait for at least an hour, it is more rewarding to the nose and palate and much more open. Bottle Size: 750 ml Alcohol: 13.5%

D’elezione vecchie vigne, top 5 bottles on the list I’ve been meaning to taste. Very surprising and not disappointing! Resembling Beaujolais Cru much more than any Italian wine (color aside) it starts dominated by fresh herbal tones, minty, zesty, hidden under a thin layer of natural funk. The palate is dominated by bright acidity, turned earth, perhaps small berries, very light and fine tannins. Still shy and quite elegant. I wish I could say I’d spend $160 on it, but still awesome to taste a piece of winemaking history

Rustic. Bretty, but appropriate. Black cherry, plum, crunchy dry fall leaves, balsamic, old leather, barnyard.

A lot of VA. Def needs to decant more. Cherry and herbs. Wild strawberries. Very tannic. Have always wanted to try this, didn’t live up to expectations.... I’m probably to fault, saw it on the wine list and wanted to try it. Didn’t have enough time to open up.

Great wine, but way to young. Yet interestingly cool and sophisticated.
