A group of us met up for happy hour and I was asked to chose the wine. The shop we were meeting at had three bottles of Viña Cubillo on the shelf; none remained when we were done. I think the group had full intentions of drinking other things but why bother when this is available. I mean, what an incredible value and it hits all the spots: bright cherry core, some olive and baking spice, bright, beautiful. Nobody else at the table had ever had anything from LdH. Now, they won’t forget. It’s always nice to share great wine with open minded people.

Aromatically there was a tremendous amount of complexity and intensity. The palate was a little hollow compared to the nose. Fine length and fading structure. Very enjoyable though.

The 2009 'Viña Cubillo' is a fantastic showing which exudes toasty oak up front with secondary aromatics of rose petals and red cherries. On the palate this impresses with its silky smooth texture, as well as concentreted flavors of red cherries, orange zest and baking spice flavors that connect with marvelous tension. The rich mouthfeel is really outstanding as it continues to impress through the finish. This is a remarkable value from one of the most famous producers in Rioja. Drink 2029-2029- 92

Lovin’ this wine after all these years. Such a beauty. Slightly oxidized; rust, cedar, tar, bing cherry. Great acid on the finish, balanced with good tannin

Oxidative and aromatic. Cherry pit, balsamic reduction and dried flowers/herbs. Sweet red fruited entry and very dry, dusty tannins. Superb concentration and lean, supple form. Vanilla notes emerging on the 2nd night. Traditional Rioja cannot be beat for the price.
