A exploration of nine 1999 Cote Rotie - Syrahs and Shiraz on their 25th anniversary. The Guigal was ranked #2 by the group, and was my #3. great wine.

Decanted for an hour before taking to the restaurant. Nice deep dark tawny color. Great nose. Notes of red and black fruit, some mocha, some dark earth, a little menthol and some wood. Rich and silky in the mouth. Finally reaching its drinking window. (Other previous bottles were closed and not showing much). Becoming La La like.

Taken to La Bicylette in Carmel. Deep and bright tawny color. Opaque. With 4 hrs of air this showed off its power and fruit in the mouth. Great notes of dark red fruit, smoked game meat, some menthol, pencil lead and graphite. Silky in the mouth. Well structured. Great expression of Syrah. This has entered a great drinking window. Give it air and enjoy. Can’t wait to see what its La La cousins will show in this vintage.

Well these two did not disappoint! Both wines showed so well and true to what people love about these great producers and their wines. • 2011 Domaine Fourrier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Les Gruenchers VV • 1999 Guigal Ampuis Cote-Rotie The Guigal I guessed blind as a 2000/2001, slightly torn between calling it a La Mouiline or Chateau Ampuis I ultimately went Ampuis. Guigal is pretty distinct in its character and the Ampuis is a beautiful introduction to the great Cote-Rotie wines from these hillside vineyards around the village of Ampuis, the namesake of this wine and the place it is made. This bottling was

One of the better chateau d'ampuis I have had, if not the best. Plenty of savory notes

Beautiful nose. Oak is well integrated. Red fruit, roses, spice. Bright acidity.

Over Oakes and very restrained. An understated wine at this point.

My god yes. Took 8 hour decant to come to fruition, but well worth the wait.
