Medium garnet and brick red. Lush and layered nose with cedar, leather, animal nuances, and dried cherries. So well rounded and integrated tannins (6/10). Medium plus to full bodied. Killer palate with tons of leather, wood chips, cherries and some plums. Long and lingering finish with great acidity.

Wine dinner with big group including Butch neighbor Art, Philip and Bewan. The best one of the Krug ‘74 yet. Nose of pruny red fruits and earth carrying over to palate and long finish. Lively, intriguing notes coming in and out. Homage to old CA Cabs, drinking history indeed.

Light rubi robe, like an old Barolo. Intoxicating and sweet aromas of plums, spices, tobacco and secondary and tertiary aromas. Wine is dry and light on its feet, complex, decadent. Lacks a bit of density and length in the finish. I imagine this was stunning at its prime. This bottle was high shoulder so perhaps a better conserved bottle will show more. Fantastic 48 years old that is fully mature but holds pretty well after 1 hour we opened. Reminder of how great California Cab can be.

One of those rare bottles that brings everything I love about this ‘hobby’ together. This was bought at the winery, stored perfectly and was in immaculate condition. Perhaps it was the amazing people around me, the appreciation of the historic nature of the wine - but I can’t recall tasting a more profound Napa Cabernet than this. It was an utter privilege.

12/30/16. Amazingly alive and took time to open up. Funky earthy with just a hint of very mature fruit on nose that carries through to palate and finish. Much better than last time and the stainless steel container when empty kept giving off the barnyard hay earthy notes for hours that gradually went down to just hay notes. Amazing.
