Samuel Smith’s Brewery at Tadcaster, founded in 1758, is the oldest brewery in Yorkshire, England, and one of the few remaining independent breweries in England. Beers from Samuel Smith’s Old Brewery have delighted consumers and inspired other brewers for over 250 years, and the brewery has also produced hard apple cider for decades. Cider has a long tradition in the UK, and sales of cider have grown dramatically there in recent years. Ciders are refreshing, clean, and festive; they are also high in natural antioxidants. Apple cider also has a long history in America - it was a common drink even before the early 1800s, when cider mills began to give free apple seeds to Mr. John "Johnny Appleseed" Chapman, figuring that a nationwide supply of apples could certainly help their industry. Cider production was dramatically slowed by the industrial revolution and by Prohibition, but due to its approachable flavor, light body and refreshing crispness the popularity of cider is now growing steadily in the US. Apple juice used to produce cider contains a mix of apple varieties selected to balance fresh apple flavor with tartness, acidity, and sweetness. Samuel Smith's uses a wine yeast strain to ferment their cider, providing a clean finish and allowing pure apple flavor to shine through. Bright straw-gold with excellent clarity, Samuel Smith's Organic Cider has a light body with brilliant conditioning, a crisp clean flavor, and a dry finish. The bouquet is fresh apples, with a soft floral note. USDA Certified Organic, Vegan, and made from gluten-free ingredients, it's also naturally gluten-free.

Crisp acidity, modest residual sugar, & mellow baking spices impart this cider with an unpretentious drinkability. #fall #cider

I’m honestly surprised how highly this cider is rated on here. I think it’s fine but it doesn’t hold a candle to the great products that so many small producers are releasing these days. Maybe ten years ago I would be impressed by this but the cider industry has grown in leaps and bounds since then. This product is chaptalized, which for me is a deal breaker to begin with. Christ, the first ingredient is water!?! Beyond that I find the residual sweetness to be excessive; it covers up any subtlety that might exist. I can’t even get through a bottle in one sitting. The aggressive marketing of the product as being ‘organic’ coupled with how little value is clearly placed on flavor profile truly makes this bottle a time capsule, indicative of what consumers responded to a decade ago.
