Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines come from the Southern Rhône and exude Old World Charm. Famed critic from Vinous, Josh Raynolds, says of Château La Nerthe''s Châteauneuf-du-Pape, "High-pitched, mineral-accented red berry and floral aromas are complicated by suggestions of allspice and licorice. Juicy and focused on the palate, displaying impressive energy and lift to the raspberry and bitter cherry flavors. Rich yet lithe, carrying no excess weight. Smooth tannins build slowly through a very long, spice- and floral-tinged finish." This wine will work beautifully with all kinds of meat dishes.

Richer style than its 2010 CDP counterparts. Seems like more syrah-based style. Rich fruit on the nose with black cherries, acaí and plum continuing through to the palate. With the medium tannins, I'd give it another 8 years to come around and maybe soften a touch.

Crushed rocks, Macerated cherries, incense, strawberry, wild herbs, sweet licorice, slight cured meats and acid still kicking. Really pretty.

Château dates back to 1560, records suggesting back to 12th century making it one of oldest estates in the heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC region near Avignon. Ruby with aromas of red fruit. Blend of about even amounts Grenache, Syrah, Mouvèdre & splash of mostly Cinsault. Aromas of berry fruits, oak & sweet spice. On the palate flavors of raspberry, cherry & blackberry, hints of oak, leather, vanilla spice & black pepper, aged in 20% new oak, complex & elegant, fine soft tannins, long finish, will age well.

Bought this bottle on one of my first wine yard trips in the southern Rhone valley. From the vintage of my boy's birth, I decided to keep it until I could share it with him on his 20th birthday, which is today. The cork was dry and broke when I tried to open it, but I decanted it. The musky tones if the Mourvèdre prevailed on the nose, but in the mouth, the warmth of the Grenache took over, while the finish was distinctively spicy Syrah. Altogether a fantastic celebration.
