Very confusing wine. Decanted for two hours and never really got anything on the nose other than leather. Just tasted ok

This is an outstanding beauty in a bottle. Stunner left bank. Herbaceous notes, sun-dried tomato, black truffle , salt, smoke and charcuteries, on the nose. Plum, dark fruit, and acid still hanging on. Very savory notes lingering in a beautiful finish. This will age well for sure. 13% nabbed from Total Wine

2016 vintage opened March 2021. If you can get past the pungent scent of thiol compounds on the nose, this wine is OK. Either they were spraying with sulfur compounds too close to harvest, or the wine maker dumped too much sulphite powder into the mix. The old penny trick mostly corrected the problem, but this is another example of the half-assed quality control I frequently see in Bordeaux wines. After dropping a clean penny into the glass and swishing it around 2 or 3 minutes, most of the thiol stink was eliminated. Leaving wet leather and tobacco on the nose. Cassis on the front. Medium tannic balance. Lots of flinty high notes on the finish along with some faintly unpleasant thiol hints on the aftertaste. I’m going to leave this in a corked bottle overnight to see if it improves any. 8.4 after the penny trick. 7.0 before the penny reacted with the thiol compounds.
