Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne Chardonnay 2008

$215

...the wine is showing brilliantly, unfurling in the glass with a vivid bouquet of citrus oil, green apple, warm brioche, crushed chalk and blanched almonds. On the palate, it's full-bodied and searingly intense, with striking concentration and incisive but perfectly integrated acids, displaying a fine mousse, and remaining quintessentially elegant despite its undeniable power and persistence. The finest Comtes de Champagne since the brilliant 2002, this is a terrific vintage for this dependably age-worthy cuvée, and though it's already impressive, the wine is built for the long haul: conserved in a cold cellar, the 2008 will still be in fine form three decades from now. Tightly wound. A hint of sweetness. Great fruit. Too young now.

Light straw color, lots of bubbles and nice energy in the glass. Has an exciting nose that expresses Blanc de Blanc attributes and the potential of a great young champagne. Opened for 30 min before trying it, I think it came out of the blocks as closed and not showing much. With air it opens up somewhat – but this definitely needs years more lying on its side to gain some age and complexity. Notes of citrus and some toast, some creamy floral notes, some river stone and some fresh cut apples. Wanted to try this out, and will wait for another 5 years before touching the next one. Reminded me of the 2002 when I first tried it. Will be great, and patience is needed to watch it develop and grow up.

In honor of some small stumbling steps back to a”normality”! This wine was worth the search and capture effort. Brilliant bright fresh mini-bubbles in excess! Alive! The acid/fruit balance is near perfect...literally weightless... and yet eerily powerful in flavor... lemon curd, lemon grass, lemon pith... loving this wine tonight, but only going to get better! Blows away ‘08 Dom... not close. 5 years from now pour this with ‘08 Cristal and let the chips fall. Prost, cheers, nostrovya...God bless America!

First course with raw seafood was sublime with this fantastic bubbly. So light and citrusy yet excellent body and minerality. Still very young but this is poised to be a star.

a constellation of factors came together such that I opened this young bottle—recent acquisition of 6 more bottles, the memory of 1990 Comtes on release, a Galloni post on Delectable touting the wine, and a thirst for quality champagne. Delicious and more open than 08 Dom today, it’s not real creamy but has super balance and drive, delicious fruit, very expansive on the palate as it warms. Each glass gets better. Sweet midpalate fruit that is dense but not weighty, incredible persistence on the palate, really a wow.

Decadent! Lacy mousse. Grapefruit with hints of brûlée and ginger. Chalky finish. Muscular. Can drink now or hold a little longer. Had with Bo Ssam!

White flowers, bread dough, golden delicious apples, lemon zest, bright acidity. Still feels like it’s holding something back
