Rotllan Torra Tirant Priorat Grenache Blend 2001

$74.99

A prodigious effort, the 2001 Tirant is a 9,000-bottle cuvee made from 30% Grenache (90-100 years old), 25% Carignan (90-100 years old), 25% young vine Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah, and 10% Merlot. Fermented in large oak foudres and aged 12 months in new French oak, it will be bottled with neither fining nor filtration. Inky/purple-colored to the rim, it boasts a spectacular bouquet of blueberries, blackberries, and the region's classic crushed stone minerality. This full-throttle yet remarkably elegant 2001 possesses tremendous intensity and texture as well as layers of flavor, but comes across as not over the top, overripe, or overly heavy. The 60-second finish reveals more noticeable tannin than the other cuvees...The 2001 Tirant is indeed a special wine. Robert Parker

Needed 60 to 90 minutes of air to open up - initially with some funk that blew off - eventually black tea, barbecued meat and stewed blackberry and plums came out.

Ripe fruits, wet rocks, petrichor, grilled mushrooms, dried herbs. Notes of ripe plum on the palate. Unlike most Priorat, it's only 25% Grenache. The rest comes from Samsó (Carignan), Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot which explains the amount of tannins left even after sitting in the bottle for 16 years. Macadamia and marzipan on the finish. Give it at least 1 hour in a decanter.

Yum. This is the second or third time I've had this wine and each time it has been immensely enjoyable. Super dark red color bordering on black. Almost port like knows yet still super super fresh. Loads of fruit loads of character long Supple silky finish. Remarkable

This still had a lot of life left. Dark brooding fruit, still good tannins after 19 years. Delicious

Blood red, earthy and tobacco-y, but the age has mellowed out and integrated the tannins nicely. Great now, could she another ten years! Before @Ryan Colthorp , I thought priorat was a grape!
