Rocca di Frassinello Le Sughere Maremma Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 2013

$18.99

This is a delicious value wine that has shown great strides forward in quality over the past two vintages. The 2013 Maremma Toscana Le Sughere di Frassinello is a hot seller... Rich flavors of dark fruit, spice, licorice and grilled herb peel off in thick layers. This wine is really beginning to shine. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A potent nose of raisins and caramelized apple, yields nicely weighty mouth feel and dry cinnamon and spice (and everything nice).

Like a fresh bouquet of flowers on the nose, strawberry, raspberry, and black tea. Exquisitely light on the palate with a short lingering tannic finish.

Nose is all bright berries but the palette is dry and tannic and more what you’d expect. It’s nice. Won’t blow anyone away but it’s nice

Cherry stem, unsweetened cocoa, and woodsy bark on the nose. And a lot of heat. Oh, and heat on the palate. These later vintages are pushing 15% and they don't hide it. This tastes like a big Syrah that's done a lot of cardio: less flabby, sloppy jam; less skin and bark; less hyper sweet, high sugar, high ABV notes on the nose and palate. But keeps the structure, jab and hook. Less "let's have a pizza with this in my sunny Tuscan garden", and more "brasato in the Italian Alps in early fall".

I've had this wine from several vintages now and, for whatever reason, I never seem to enjoy it anywhere near as much as the critics, despite my being a fan of many Italian reds. This got an hour in a wide bottom decanter, and was consumed over the following 5 hours. The nose was a bit tight all night, and the palate showed the same. Some rustic, funky notes arrived towards the end of the bottle, which didn't help my enjoyment much. I would suggest giving this 3-4 years in the cellar to show all it has to offer, but I didn't really feel excited about what it did show at this point and don't plan to lay any down.

Nice wine. Actually great price/quality range! Unfortunately this 2013 bottle was showing an evident presence of Brett. Overall a pleasant and good drinking wine.
