Pétrus Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2001

$2895

The 2001 Petrus (2,160 cases produced) exhibits more depth and richness than any other Pomerol I tasted. Its deep saturated ruby/plum/purple color is accompanied by a tight but promising bouquet of vanilla, cherry liqueur, melted licorice, black currants, and notions of truffles and earth. Rich, full-bodied, and surprisingly thick as well as intense, there is plenty of structure underlying the wealth of fruit and extract... it promises to be one of the longest-lived wines of the vintage, not to mention one of the most concentrated. Solid Pomerol, slightly off vintage perhaps for Pétrus, needs quite a bit of time to show itself, but for the price it's never been a wine that impressed me.

This bottle needs a 90-120 minute decant. After which it offers on the mouth some red fruit surrounding a core of black fruit and thoroughly integrates note of leather, tobacco, dark chocolate, espresso and the faintest trace of stems and gelatin. It is beautifully balanced and has the most amazing finish which seems to expand occupy your mouth forever! A terrific bottle which will pay off in spades if held for another five to ten years

Ruby red core , light ruby rim, almost touch of pink . Lots of black berry , black plum , sweet black fruits . Floral also , mineral laced. There is real volume on the palate,, a lot of the black berry , plum fruit, long finish, excellent balance. Tannin velvety but present , lovely vibrant acidity. Alcohol totally in balance. A great wine , still young really , will last and improve over many years .
