Penfolds Grange South Australia Shiraz 1997

$499

...looks to be a classic Grange, although slightly softer and more forward than the backward 1996. The saturated purple-colored 1997 offers a gorgeously sweet nose of blackberry liqueur, cherries, camphor, chocolate, plums, and mocha. The wine is opulently-textured, extremely soft, layered, and seductive, with Grange's tell-tale personality well-displayed, but in a seamless, seductive style. This is a superb Grange that can hold its own against the more heralded 1996. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2022. Robert Parker

In a double blind flight of Aussie Shiraz. No surprise that this was near the top. Our group called Oz Shiraz immediately on the flight. This was fresh and youthful, though fully mature.

The nose is a little too open. Blue fruit, almost Bordeaux-like but with an American oak note. Nice balance- nice acidity

I've been staring at this bottle for 13 years and have been wanting to open it up on several occasions. My patience ran out. This is definitely a Shiraz and definitely from Australia but with enough acid and tannin to carry it through so time could layer its tertiary flavors. At its prime now IMO

1997 vintage. One of the great wines of the world and the ‘97 is poppin’ currently. Oodles of structure with both plenty of finishing distance and fruit. Phenomenal.

Full flavoured grange. 50th birthday celebration which always makes it better.

Solid, well rounded Penfolds Grange. Wasn’t mind blowing but certainly not disappointing either.

Not every day your dad turns 80. Great way to celebrate. Full body, still plenty of life left.
