Penfolds Grange South Australia Shiraz 1996

$449

Firm in texture, with slightly gritty tannins around a gorgeous beam of black cherry, blueberry and plum flavors. This is beautifully focused and complete on the nose, but it's a bit chewy on the palate. Built for aging. Needs some rich food to balance the tannins at this point. Gets better as it warms in the glass... Wine Spectator

I'mI'm not to fond of the smokey, tarry notes on the nose here; it's like American barrels with far to much toast added to them. The minty addition is great, as is the flawless fruit, BUT it's hard to to find due to the overwhelming oak regime. I like it much better on the palate; serious drive here! A bit hot on the finish and it lacks that hint of elegance which makes Grange a great wine. 1996 is not there. Period.

September 2019 TWG tasting through a Grange vertical. Given the age range, most were coming into a sweet spot, while the youngest of the bunch was still a baby a decade in. All excellent examples of the label, with the best in my mind more akin to a top-tier St. Joseph with violet, leather, and heavy blue/black fruit.
