Penfolds Grange South Australia Shiraz 1996

$449

Firm in texture, with slightly gritty tannins around a gorgeous beam of black cherry, blueberry and plum flavors. This is beautifully focused and complete on the nose, but it's a bit chewy on the palate. Built for aging. Needs some rich food to balance the tannins at this point. Gets better as it warms in the glass... Wine Spectator

I'mI'm not to fond of the smokey, tarry notes on the nose here; it's like American barrels with far to much toast added to them. The minty addition is great, as is the flawless fruit, BUT it's hard to to find due to the overwhelming oak regime. I like it much better on the palate; serious drive here! A bit hot on the finish and it lacks that hint of elegance which makes Grange a great wine. 1996 is not there. Period.

Saturday afternoon with some Manchego and Hoummus. Casual, spicy and tawny.

Licorice, red fruit and stewed blackberry. Hints of menthol and violets. Very pretty!

Every bottle is great, and has unique character and complexity. Definitely interesting trying several bottles back to back. Max Schubert will be proud. Shows how difficult it is to write a description. I would write 4 completely different things for 4 nominally the same wines.

Second bottle was an improvement over the first mostly by drinking out of straws. Jeff was more excited by his joint. Can't believe they are selling this for £45. Must be a mistake. Probably have a couple more.
