Marchesi Antinori Tignanello Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 2014

$215

“The highlight in this range, the exquisite 2014 Tignanello is all about persistence and understated class. The aromatics alone are captivating. Sculpted, finely delineated flavors add to the wine's vivid personality… Above all else, though, the 2014 is all about harmony, and there is plenty of that here. Unfortunately, production is down 30%.” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

Very well integrated flavours, but SO overpriced. I have brunellos and chiantis that outperform this wine any day of the week. Don't get me wrong, it's still fantastic... but you can do better if you're going to spend $100+

I will preface this note by disclosing that I am generally not a fan of Super Tuscans. I like old school Toscana. But I will try to be objective here. The nose is very evocative of a classified growth Bordeaux: lots of cedary, gravelly scents and some dark berry fruit underneath. In the mouth it is concentrated and soft, but develops weight in the back half of the palate. Some peppery heat from alcohol at the end too. I know it’s predominantly Sangiovese, but it really does taste very Left Bank, except for a little note redder fruit at the end.

On the nose; saddle-wood, dark currants/cassis, lavender, violets, candied style; dark cherries, blackberries, plums, strawberries & blue fruit mix. Light sweet tarry notes, leather, tobacco, moist, dark turned earth & limestone minerals. dark cherries, blackberries, plums, strawberries & blue fruit mix. The body is full and rich. The palate is a beautiful, classic expression of IGT wines from Tuscany. The length, structure, balance & tension are exceptional for such a young wine. Tannins soften, round and a bit chewy. It’s ruby & ripe; dark cherries, blackberries, plums, strawberries & blue fruit mix. Sweet tarry notes, black licorice, touch herbaceous, light smoke, savory meats, nice spice with a slight sting on the long set, saddle-wood, cigar, loamy soils, limestone minerals, crushed rocks, dry stems & leather. The round acidity is beautiful. The long elegant finish is excellent for this wine this young. Photos of; the Antinori Cottage, Tingnanello Vineyard, the Antinori Family and the Tignanello barrel room. Drink in the peak window of 2024-2035.

Wound up tight. Very young. Reminds me of Forman Cabernet. Black/red berry fruit, tobacco leaf, herb/dust. Shorter finish but complex and balanced. No heat detected.

Very complex in the nose, with notes of spices, scrub herbs, red fruit (some dark hints too). Great balance and length. Up to the name

On Wednesday I had the pleasure of having the 2014 Tignanello Marchesi Antinori Toscana IGT. A blend of 75% Sangiovese and a bigger portion of Cabernet Sauvignon with some Cabernet Franc. The nose has beautiful red fruit, cherry, red currant, spices, cedar, leather, roses and graphite. On the palate there is big beautiful tart cherries, strawberry, red plum, cassis, roasted pepper, dried roses, brick and chalky gravel. This wine is medium to full bodied with an excellent balance of medium + vibrant acidity and fine well blended sweet tannin that brings us right into a long and persistent lingering finish. A beautiful bottle of wine that can be drank now or later with a bit of aging. Have a great weekend and be safe. Nostrovia!

I'd love to buy a case of this and travel through its many forms. I've been told by reliable sources that Tignanello doesn't have the shelf life you'd expect, and since this tastes young, I imagine it will blossom beautifully in the next few years, and start a slow decline. For right now, very fresh on the palate. Soft but contrarily muscular at the same time. Blackberry and raspberry jam, soft tannins, medium acidity. I can't say this is worth the hype but it's certainly history in a bottle.

Very fragrant. Lots of cedar, little cinnamon and like a hint of crushed roasted San marzano tomato. Peppery tannins that dissipates slowly and pleasantly. A little black tea on the finish and almost something reminiscent of a fire ball candy...not saying this is hot, but that after taste of dusty spicy cinnamon. Would love to see how this develops over the years.
