M. Chapoutier Croix de Bois Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2007

$79.99

The superb 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Croix de Bois may turn out to be the finest example from this vineyard yet produced. Chapoutier's single vineyard Chateauneuf du Papes represent two different areas of the appellation, with the Croix de Bois coming from the eastern sector in the Bedarrides region.. Chapoutier has adjusted the manner in which he ages these cuvees, as they are now completely aged in tank. The wine boasts extraordinary notes of ground pepper, lavender, sweet black currants, kirsch, and hints of tapenade as well as black raspberries. Full-bodied with flavors of grilled meat, a superb texture, sweet tannin, and a 50+-second finish, it should drink well for 20+ years. Both the Barbe Rac and Croix de Bois are 100% Grenache. Dark and punchy on the nose with grapey, slightly roasted plummy fruit. Quite high alcohol in the nose. Rich and pure Grenache on the palate. Chocolatey notes and a very smooth intense finish. Not too hot.

Hmmm...this Is the first 2007 CdP that I actually enjoyed so far. Dark fruit, licorice and relatively balanced compared to a couple of others that were hot messes. Paired with backyard Korean BBQ.

Nicely done 100% Grenache. Denser and more powerful than you'd normally get from this area, but still very graceful and nimble on the palate. Abd come on, it's Chapoutier.

Initially taken aback with too heavy fruit, this opened up and was a really great wine, close to profound.

I can't figure this wine out. Seems like the fruit character is hiding but the terroir is still reserved. Definitely drinkable though.
