Kapcsándy Family Winery Grand Vin State Lane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

$525

...I think this is the third perfect score I’ve given to this wine, which is the essence of their vineyard, representing about 13% of the total production, or a mere 320 cases. The wine has a gorgeously opaque purple color and a beautiful nose of camphor, charcoal, blackberry and creme de cassis with licorice and truffle. It has unbelievable richness, great texture, tremendous finesse, precision and delineation. Very intense, full-bodied and super-pure, the length of the wine must be at least 50+ seconds. This is a gorgeous wine and one of the great superstars of this fabulous vintage. Drink it over the next 25-30 years. Robert Parker

The 2012 Grand Vin from Kapcsàndy is an absolutely fascinating wine, which is composed of 99% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot. This fabulous wine instantly impresses as it bursts open to a seductive nose, with captivating aromas of sweet ripe black currants, blueberries, violets, graphite and hints of sweet spices all taking shape. This goes on to impress with its full-bodied richness and gorgeous plush, utterly seamless texture that gracefully envelops the palate. It displays wonderful overall balance, concentration and depth with enough structure to support the layers of ripe dark fruits that expand all the way through the beautiful long finish. The 2012 Grand Vin has it all and is clearly one of the finest wines from this vintage. While this is certainly nothing short of marvelous today, it also possesses the characteristics that will allow this to age marvelously for decades.

"If you can't make a great wine in this vintage, you should get another job," Lou Kapcsándy told me in the Spring of 2013, when I first tasted this wine with Kapcsándy, his son Louis, and the late Denis Malbec. It was a fascinating tasting because the wines were all still in separate lots, unblended, and we tasted each lot cooper by cooper...one of the most instructive tastings I have ever done anywhere. Today, a few years later, the 2012 Grand Vin is still stellar.

One of my very favorite 2012s from Napa. More importantly, sending all of my thoughts to everyone in Napa and Sonoma affected by the fires. Vinous and Delectable will do everything we can to support your communities.

Solid wine, and opened in the presence of a 14 Tusk, an 05 Scarecrow, 09 Oakville Winegrowers Cuvee, 88 Dunn, 07 Colgin IX, a 93 Harlan, and an 08 Pritchard Hill Chappellet. I'd say it was probably my 3rd favorite out of those (the 88 Dunn and 09 Oakville Winegrowers being the two Napa Cabs IMO that bested this one). You know you're doing right when a 12 Kapcsandy State Lane is third! This wine has it all going on. Smooth, still slightly youthful fruit sweetness present here. Luscious black fruit on the front and middle with a peppery finish. This wine seemed to be a very approachable drinker even for only six years old. I'd put it at 96 easily but would be interested to see how it would taste if corked and enjoyed tomorrow (service announcement: .it was gone rather fast!). Toasted tannin still present. Wine has incredible structure and depth.

Fresh red apple and cherry aromas. Medium bodied with cherry flavors dominating and a slightly bitter finish.
