Joseph Phelps Vineyards Insignia Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1986

9.226 ratings on Delectable
$199

This surprisingly rich, dark garnet-colored Insignia displays notes of cedarwood, tobacco leaf, black currants, graphite and damp earth. Medium to full-bodied with remarkable density, richness and vigor for its age... Another strong performance by an Insignia from the mid-eighties... Robert Parker

Dry light fruit perfume nose with herbs. Fruits have turned to rustic figs, prunes and dates, dry cranberries/rhubarb/pomegranate, dark cherries that have taken on a slight liqueur quality, ripe strawberries, spiced plum cedar, soft used leather, tobacco leaf, powdery crushed rocks, anise and a lean dry, high acid fig, date, prune and cooked light to mid red cooked fruit finish. Out of magnum.

Magnum. Sadly, a bit corked. Tasted blind with tasting group. Mineral, cinnamon, mint in the aromas. In a very pretty spot.

1986 3l insignia. This was the perfect size bottle that kept this wine alive. Showed cedar earth balance and the texture was like silk.

Best on pop-and-pour, this faded a bit with air. Sported a pleasant green pepper note on the nose (but not on the palate), with an interesting tangy element in the finish.

A very special bottle of the 1986 Joseph Phelps Insignia. This was out of a 6L Imperial. Part of a limited artists series done by the Wine Spectator. Very delicate in flavor with hints of dried herbs and mint. Very cool to try!
