Rich, smooth and in balance with that abv power. Strong notes of pipe tobacco and cocoa.

This is a massive wine. Lots of sweet humus and wet earth, rich berry ooze, and sandalwood. Large bodied, with peppery alcoholic heat peaking through, but good acidity nonetheless. It’s 15%, and if it were a degree less, it would’ve been outstanding. As is, it was a fine accompaniment to a rich pasta sauce and braised pork braccioles.

2012: Another hit from the maestro. This is one of those great wines which are so lush and well-balanced that no particular flavor sticks out, just gooood. Beautiful richness and viscosity without the raisiny sweetness of other Valpo-based efforts. Drinking like a dream now. Hoping the 2015s will be as good. $90 a while ago,

#4. Amarone perfection. Raisin and fig notes, acid, on the hotter side. Wish I’d put together a cheese board for this. Seemed like unanimous favorite.
