Fonseca Vintage Port Blend 2011 (1500ml)

$185

..a strident bouquet with lifted scents of freshly picked blackberries, kirsch, crushed stone and a dash of Hoi Sin and oyster sauce. It is very well-defined, very focused and direct. The palate is silky smooth with not a rough edge in sight... A slight viscosity on the finish lacquers the tongue and indicates a core of sweet fruit is ticking away underneath that will surely explode several years after bottling. A tincture of salted licorice on the aftertaste is very attractive. This will turn out to become an outstanding Fonseca...just 6,000 cases were produced. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Wonderfully balanced at 10 years old (from bottling) and in half bottle. Paired surprisingly well with a chocolate mousse cake to celebrate a family member's birthday. All plummy, bramble, and slightly herbal wrapped with a throughline of taut, stoney intensity.

Really big rich fruit, very dark and almost impenetrable nose, a touch of liqourice. Fills the mouth with masses of really fresh fruit. Very very smooth, magic intense lifting finish which goes on and on. Big underlying structure beneath the fruit. Mouth coating, powerful, balanced, magic.

Barely drinkable. Check back for a good time in two or three decades...

Honestly this was selected to pair with a chocolate tart but solo or with the tart it was amazing. Not your typical overly sweet or mediciney port. This was an elegant red wine with deep red flavors and amazing balance. Likely my favorite port of the past 10 years. Decanted 3 hours before we drank it.

Very nice vintage port. Could use several (or dozens) of years to open up and mellow out a bit, but this has deep fruit and excellent acid regardless.
