E. Guigal Château d'Ampuis Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2005

$149

If the 2006 represents a 1991-ish feminine offering, the 2005 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis is a macho, masculine-styled effort. Dense, concentrated, and powerful, with gamy black currant, spice box, bacon fat, and herb notes, this chewy, tannic, enormously promising requires 3-4 years of cellaring, and should drink well over the following two decades or more. This is quite mute and contained. Clearly good fruit but quite compact. Dark plummy violet fruit. Savory and coiled. Needs time

Bloody meat, dark spice, red and black plums. Great acidity all throughout.

Elegant and beautifully built-up with its classic combination of red berries, cassis, all-spice, cloves and bay leafs and meat stock flavors, framed by toasty oak and grainy tannins, finishing fresh and mineral-lazed.

The Guigal was the most expensive and the best wine of the flight. Not necessarily my favorite but the best.

Hmm. Wouldn't think Cote-Rotie in a hundred years. Shocker... Until you find out it's Guigal. Well made, certainly, but big and chocolaty... Cherry candy. Not my cup. Seems it could be from anywhere.
