Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 2005

$59.95

Forward and lush for the vintage, with dark currant and fig paste flavors backed by licorice, coffee, garrigue and braised beef notes. The long, smoky finish has a lingering touch of mesquite. The profile is black fruit, but the structure is remarkably elegant for the vintage, with lovely poise. Drink now through 2023. Wine Spectator

Dark scarlet and mostly opaque. Medicinal nose. Notes of black raspberries, black soil, cherry kirsch and herbs, Hot and herbal in the mouth. The Grenache influence is obvious. Love Charvin but this seems a bit hot and over the top vs past vintages I’ve coveted.

Dark murky reddish color, almost opaque. Crazy nose with notes of cherries, earth, herbs, tree bark and beets. Very rich in the mouth. A touch of heat/alcohol. Very Grenache-y. Good finish. Entering a nice drinking window but no need to hurry.

Concentrated and definitely mature with rich, ripe and sweet scents of dried figs, pan-fried anise seeds and roasted herbs. While fading, this does carry a core of concentration and very soft tannins, so better to drink sooner than later. Well made but slightly boring and flabby.

Hard to assess. Hot but not over ripe in terms of palate presence. Raspberry and herbs. Hold for several years.

Sound. Young. Not charming. Bit 4-square and masculine as many 05's are.

From Mag. Fairly subdued fruit, but loads of Provençal herbs and garrigue. Lovely harmony. Time to drink these.
