Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 1998

$99.99

I have had this wine a half-dozen times since I first reviewed it, and there is no question I was too conservative. Although more evolved than other 1998s, there is no denying it is a sumptuous, extraordinarily compelling effort. Dark ruby-colored, with a gorgeous perfume of black raspberry liqueur intermixed with kirsch, pepper, spice box, and balsam, it displays superb depth, fabulous concentration, a boatload of glycerin, and a seamless finish. The enormous fruit admirably conceals the wine's high tannin. It can be drunk now, but promises to develop for two decades. Kudos to the young Laurent Charvin who first estate-bottled his Chateauneuf du Pape in 1990... Robert Parker

Dark tawny color, barely translucent. Impactful red fruit nose. Notes of raspberries, herbs de Provence, red cherries, pepper and some freshly cut wood. Lots going on in the mouth. Big fruit, still powerful acidity and a lengthy finish. Blind you might guess this as red burg, which is the norm for Charvin. Great stuff.

Tawny red. Earthy nose of dried cranberries, brush, herbs, and stone. Nice texture in the mouth. Great finish. At peak i think as the fruit has softened ant the tannins are nicely resolved.

Dark reddish purple, regal color. Big nose of dark fruit, warm berry and herbs de Provence. After 2 hrs of air this really developed nicely in the mouth. Med plus finish. At peak and will probably be there for several more years.

This shows the best of Chateuneuf du Pape, framed in elegance. The nose draws you in with herbs and red fruit. This carries through on the palate along with smoked meats and some some pronounced tannins, and the finish is long

Smoked bacon in a French barn. Not sure which comes first. Love it. 1998. Christmas 2014. Second bottle December 2016. Even better!
