Readers should be on the look out for the 2001 The Dead Arm Shiraz, one of the greatest examples of this cuvee. Its dense black/purple color is accompanied by celestial aromas of melted licorice, graphite, blackberries, cassis, incense, anise, and toasty oak. Fabulously concentrated, with great purity, an unctuous, viscous texture, and an amazingly long, 60-second plus finish, this fabulous baby will need 5-6 years of cellaring, and should drink well over the following 20-25 years. This 2001 opened to ripe almost port like nose and I thought surely done. But the raisiny front edge turned into a bready cake fruitcake which was fun but soon was turned into over the hill flat wine. This back label was the longest descriptor ever at like more than 1000 words. Drink this robust wine young as the alcohol and fruit was meant for early drinking and not aging. Pirepalo MW thinks different. Maybe I had a bad bottle which happens a lot more than anyone thinks.

Pleasant surprise found out of my cellar as I dreaded drinking a dark fruit Hugh alcohol bomb for a long time but this 2001 was really plush, balanced and still good acid and softer tannins. Lots of dark berry fruit, anise, spicy, cocoa, but still heady drink!

So tasty but a touch disjointed. Delicious characteristics are all there but they showed up by themselves. Could've used a bit more continuity.

Great wine! Still super fresh at 13 years old. Blackberry, black cherry, cassis, leather, eucalyptus, date, the list goes on and on... Very enjoyable

Sandalwood, licorice, wet patio, blood sausage, bourbon cherry liqueur, and…before I go on ad nauseum, I’ll simply say this is extraordinarily complex. Maybe at peak though seems to have more stuffing to lose. Happy to have 5 more :).
