Concha y Toro Don Melchor Puente Alto Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

$95

Fantastic aromas of blackcurrants and other dark fruit with crushed stone, iron and oysters, following through to a full body that shows incredible energy and depth, offering ripe yet fresh fruit, together with bright herbs and earth. Precision and balance of the intensity of the vintage. Layered. Perhaps the greatest Don Melchor ever made... James Suckling

The 30th Anniversary of this signature wine grapes Puente Alto vineyard, deep Ruby with aromas of dark fruits and espresso notes, a blend of 98% Cab Sauv & 2% aged for 15 month in French oak (66% new). On the palate flavors of black cherry and  blackberry with herb, tobacco and smoky oak spice notes. Firm tight tannins, long finish ending with fruit, cacao and toasty spice, needs time to develop, cellar a while! Tasting Sample!

Don Melchor 2017 contains 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Franc, both from Maipo Alto. This earlier harvest resulted in precise, intense doses of cassis, raspberry and blackberry jam sprinkled with spices and country herbs. A young wine, the tannic structure bodes well for the future even with the moderate freshness. (Joaquín Hidalgo, Vinous, March 2020)

I wasn’t a big fan. Ripe fruit but something off for me.

The real grand cru of South America. Elegant, silky, subtle and complex. Classy. Iron on the nose. Great multilayered cherry flavors. Medium persistance.

Loved loved loved. Drank 2017 in 2020. Soft tannins, soft fruit, low acid, does NOT need food to enjoy. Tasted at Conche y Toro. Goes down as one of my favorite wines on the planet.
