Colgin Cellars IX Estate Napa Valley Red Blend 2011

$329

...Bright ruby-red. Wonderfully scented nose offers dark currant, black olive, licorice, smoke, caramel oak and shoe polish, all lifted by an exhilarating note of tangerine oil. Sappy, sweet and smooth, showing compelling mineral and floral lift to the intense dark berry flavors...its penetration and lift are remarkable... Stephen Tanzer, Vinous Media

Nice balance, fruit and lift. Fruit and savory notes play well off each other.

Love Colgin. We are opening the 11 & 12 tonight to compare. The 11 is soft and seems light on the palate. Excellent but not drop dead gorgeous.

This is one of the stars of the vintage by far. I can count on one hand how many 2011 Napa reds I like. This wine is NOT a fruit bomb but rather it is beautifully adapted to the vintage and for me most importantly does not display those South American green pepper and herb notes like so many of its 2011 peers (something that for me is a deal breaker). Nose is pure soy sauce with pipe tobacco and ripe plum. Palate is dark cherry and with a defined salinity and with expressive limestone and crushed rocks. Finish is subtle but lingers for 60 seconds. This is ready to drink right now but give plenty of air.
