Clarendon Hills Astralis Syrah 2006

$185

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2006 Astralis has stunning nose redolent of warm blackberries, meat, toast and charcoal, infused with notes of smoked duck, anise and a slight bit of peat...big, rich, and powerful full-bodied wine has firm yet velvety tannins, a vibrant acid line and is very long on the finish. Drink it now to 2026+. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Rich decadent old vine aromas Blackberry, Herbal Prune and Liquorice aromas. In a blind tasting this screams old vine Australian Shiraz. From 95 year old vines planted in McLaren Vale. Full bodied, balanced with silky smooth Tannins. One of 22 wines in the Langtons Exceptional Category along with the usual suspects like Grange and Hill of Grapes. I have tasted this wine before but this is the first bottle I have shared. Not easy to find even in Australia but worth seeking out.

Not your everyday Syrah (not Shiraz), one of the icon wines from Australia. The Astralis is an ode to the Northern Rhone, while still certainly Australian in character. Nothing like the late 90s and early 00s flame outs of massively ripe and oaked wines. While the nose seemed a little reticent, the underlying texture and full body were kept in check with a good underpinning of acidity and freshness. Plenty of raspberry, meat and subtle spice fan out over the palate. Plenty youthful still and should go another 10 years easy.

Please don't tell anyone I am really enjoying this wine. It's over 13 percent abv and I feel weird and slightly guilty.
