Chateau Montelena The Montelena Estate Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 (1500ml)

$279

Montelena’s 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate wraps around the palate with serious depth. Even with all of its intensity, the 2009 has a silkiness that makes it incredibly delicious at this early stage. Red berries, flowers, tobacco and sweet herbs all flesh out on the generous, radiant finish... Montelena’s 2009 Estate is showing very nicely... Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. Classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. A great example of what California can produce.

Wow! So smooth, so rich, so delightful! Dry, yet delicate on the palate! Wonderful dark cherry notes.

Very disappointing wine for the price. Have loved this wine in the past, 09 should be a good year. Decanted up to 3 hrs, tried some each hr. Too light, lacked backbone and structure. No way should this wine cost as much as it did. Not a terrible wine but no wow factor at all. Not corked or off, winery off its game 88 pts at best maybe even less.

I liked some of the other vintages more but this still drank surprisingly well. Either, it had a the perfect amount of age or it was meant to drink early because the tannins were approachable and firm, balanced perfect against the fruit. Sort of a spicy finish with some slight herbaceous notes behind the raspberry and black current. Not as complex as I would have hoped, but man, it went down easy.

At ten this baby is coming into its own. Marvelous red fruit with so much life and youth. Will continue to improve for years. The Barrett Family has an incredible ability to make the most of every vintage!

Strong ethyl acetate (EtAc) aka 'nail polish remover' aroma upon opening. Update: After breathing for an hour, EtAc aroma seemed to blow off but the wine remained moderately reduced. Is EtAc a stylistic characteristic of Montelena Estate or simply a wine fault?
