Château Margaux Premier Grand Cru Classé Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2001

$645

Performing well from bottle, Chateau Margaux's 2001, which is somewhat reminiscent of both the 1985 and 1999, is an elegant, seamlessly constructed effort with a deep ruby/purple color, and a beautiful nose of flowers, creme de cassis, blackberries, and cedar. A blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, and 4% Cabernet Franc, this forward, opulent beauty can be drunk now or cellared for 15-20 years. This is one of the most elegant wines of the vintage. Robert Parker

The sleeper vintage. Simply just ready to go, holding nothing back as it wafts from the glass and the decanter with layers of cassis, cedar, violets and licorice. This is a wine of texture, as Margaux should be, and indeed its greatest attribute on this occasion. Liquid cashmere in the mouth with melting tannins, it’s sensual and elegant, caressing the palate with each sip, leading to its black truffle and mineral inflicted finale that keeps on going. Excellent showing tonight, and for my tastes drinking at its apogee.

First bottle of Margaux I enjoyed a few years ago.

As usual for this dinner I felt like it could have been opened a few years later, but unlike the burgs this was still super delicious.

A beautiful wine from an unremarkable vintage for Bordeaux. Barnyard, wet leaves old rose petals on the nose and dark ripe fruits, black cherry, pencil shavings, light hints of coco and leather on the palate. I love this wine and the 2001 will be even better in a decade (2028).
