Château Margaux Premier Grand Cru Classé Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 1998

$395

A deep garnet core with deep brick rim. The nose has moderate intensity, not the exuberance and exhilaration of the Haut-Brion, but expressive, with notes of blackberry, tar, a touch of leather and bilberry. What it does not have is Margaux's signature aroma of violets - this is more reserved and masculine. The palate is medium-bodied, quite peppery upon entry with good acidity and balance, yet missing the femininity and the finesse that marks out say the 1999 or the 2001. The finish is quite dry, perhaps a little dour compared to other Chateau Margaux. Neal Martin (eRobertParker.com)

In a perfect place though a little disappointed in the length. Still a very fine wine.

An elegant wine that shows its class in a tough vintage. Dried flowers, sweet rich cassis, blacktop. The real star tonight was the venue. About 35 minutes out from my old country farm and located in Kinston, NC is The Chef and the Farmer by Vivian Howard. An amazing farm to table with flair creation in the food graveyard of Eastern NC. Extraordinary apps and entrees, fresh modern but comfortable environs and friendliness from everyone....and I'm confident they have the best wine list for 250 miles. A true destination dining experience. Thank you @DAG for the recommendation and intro.

Subtle beauty, nice fragrance, a classic but not outstanding vintage, tannins are much rounder, need time to open up, a carafe will help him for sure, great length - another beautiful occasion #winelover

Fantastic up front, but the finish was clipped short.

Was absolutely splendid after sitting in a decanter for 2 hours. With all the delicate yet powerful flavors you would expect from a first growth, and a very silky texture, and a finish that went on forever.

Still very structured. Heavy tobacco, not super fruit forward compared to the average Margaux. Decanted and still have significant lasting power.

Clear, deep garnet in colour with clean, pronounced aromas of flowers, black cherries, tobacco, leather and figs. Dry, medium to full bodied with high acidity and high tannins that are in perfect balance. Complex flavours of blackberries, cherries and vanilla with even a hint of tobacco. Long finish. Opened 6 - 7 hours before being decanted for an hour or two before consumption. An outstanding wine. One of the best, if not the best, I’ve ever had. An absolutely fantastic accompaniment to the rack of Romney Salt Marsh lamb.

For absolutely no reason whatsoever. Bought a case when my daughter was born and cracked the first one open. Good fruit, nice tannins. Poured into the carafe to see how that changes it. Not a killer year or stored under perfect conditions but still stands as a classic. Drinking with it my daughter born in 1998!
