Château Lafite Rothschild Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

$1999

The 1986 possesses outstanding richness, a deep color, medium body, a graceful, harmonious texture, and superb length. The penetrating fragrance of cedar, chestnuts, minerals, and rich fruit is a hallmark of this wine. Powerful, dense, rich, and tannic, as well as medium to full-bodied, with awesome extraction of fruit, this Lafite has immense potential...Anticipated maturity: 2000-2030. Robert Parker

Graphite. Cassis. Cigar box. Lightly dusty but still fucking delicious. To quote the Somm "this wine is fucking perfect."

Decanted and opened beautifully over 2 hrs. Initial nose was perfumed but overwhelmed by new oak. Palate was tight and ripe. After opening up the new oak mostly blew off showing incredible complexity dominated by ripe black, red, and some blue fruit, along with mounds of flowers, truffle, smoke, graphite, and earth. The palate was full but perfectly balanced. Great complexity and concentration. The structure was still very sturdy with silky tannins and taught acid. The length was tremendously long. This was in great shape and will only continue to get better. #chateaulafite #pauillac #bordeaux #premiergrandcru #firstgrowth #cabernetsauvignon #ctbucklinwine

Color density was shockingly rich for a 30 year old wine, but nose and palate showed the graceful aging of this absolute classic. Graphite, pencil dust, wet Forrest floor, touch of green pepper, very little primary fruit, but just a touch of black plum and tart cherry. Wonderful, but felt it was missing that "other-worldly" character that stops time and space.

A sleeping Beauty that never woke up after 3+ hours in decanter. When will this legend wake up and live up to all its hype? An honestly disappointing experience given its credence.
