Château La Mission Haut-Brion Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 2001

The 2001 is just showing a tiny bit of maturity on the rim. The nose is very elegant, almost understated in character, quite rounded and lithe, the Merlot intense and dominating over the Cabernet. Seductive bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, lovely ripe rounded black fruits cut through with vibrant acidity. Nice tension like the '05 with a crisp, slightly leafy finish with great length. Do not ignore the quality of this wine. Excellent. Drink 2012-2030. Tasted May 2008. Neal Martin (eRobertParker.com)

Let's start negative; it lacks mid palate weight and width. Everything else about this wine is all positive! Lovely, juicy acidity, sweet and seductive tannins, amazingly pure and precise red fruits and above all it's caressing finish. Drinkability can always be spelled La Mission.

Whole peppercorn, cinnamon stick, blackberry, coconut husk. Coffee mid palate appears. Red velvet cake finish. Moderate sediment. Invigorating menthol finish. Good decanting is required. Plenty of youthfulness. A real treat!

Full, meaty and rich. Dark fruit and generous minerality. Expansive and broad on the palate. This is in a great spot.

Currant, plum, graphite, vanilla, violet. Kind of tight, but I'm sure it will be great in another decade or two.

Delish and early in its life, needs to breathe but spectacular.
