Château Haut-Brion Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend 1993

...It may even turn out to be better than Haut-Brion's 1990! The 1993 displays an attractive, saturated dark ruby color, and a reticent but emerging bouquet of red and black fruits, minerals, vanillin, and spice. With Haut-Brion's characteristically intense, earthy, tobacco flavors well-displayed in this wine's medium-bodied format, this is once again one of Bordeaux's greatest examples of outstanding concentration and flavor intensity combined with finesse and elegance. There is moderate tannin, but like most Haut-Brions it will be delicious at a young age. It will undoubtedly put on weight and richness as it ages over the next 25 years. Very impressive! The body is leaner than you'd like. However, it has all the characteristics of Haut Brion. Creamed; blackberries, black raspberries. Black plum, tobacco, leather, burnt ambers, wet black earth, dried coffee grounds, stoney gravel, decayed flowers and a touch of mushroom. It starts well but doesn't have the polished finish one expects from Haut Brion. From the 1993-95 trifecta tasting, the only disappointment. But, it's still Haut Brion! Out of 375ml.

Proof that the great estates make superb wines even in the more difficult vintages. Full & ripe in the Pessac style so typical of HB. Beautifully fresh & balanced & all of this in a perfectly balanced medium-bodied 12.5% alc. Amazing wine.
